10 MORE Ridiculous Horror Movie Villains That Shouldn’t Have Worked… But Did

4. An Imaginary Toy Bear - Imaginary (2024)

Jeff Wadlow's Imaginary has not enjoyed the reception it deserves, most likely due to the film's uncomplimentary similarity to the films of the Insidious universe. Nevertheless, there is much to unpack in a film where the lines between imagination and reality are erased, and Wadlow and his team's commitment to practical effects and genuine scares should be enough to keep any horror fan watching. And while the villain of the piece - an imaginary toy bear - doesn't sound very promising, there turns out to be far more than meets the eye.

Imaginary touches down in the lives of Jessica (DeWanda Wise) and her adoptive children Alice (Pyper Braun) and Taylor (Taegen Burns) when they move into Jessica’s childhood home. Alice finds Chauncey the stuffed bear in the house, and her newly erratic behaviour combined with a series of creepy occurrences surrounding the toy show that he may be more than meets the eye.

Imaginary friends don't normally make good material for movies, given that you can't see them and, well, they don't exist. But the delusion surrounding Chauncey Bear (that only a select few people can see him) is a main plot driver in Imaginary, and it is over halfway through the film before we realise that, to most people, he's not really there. Thus, what could have been a soft and toothless villain proves to be the backbone of the film, with the bear managing to cause as much havoc as Chucky while barely moving a stitch.
