5. Final Destination

Would any horror movie opening list be complete without due reverence paid to Final Destination? The series that made the beginning ten minutes the most important of any blockbuster, all five movies open up with an intrusive thought and blow it up into a full-scale anxiety dream, asking the question of 'what would happen if we hit turbulence?' before showing in excruciating detail every terrifying malfunction that would drop the plane into a hurtling fireball of death out of the sky.

Whilst the third instalment is a close contender for the roller coaster nightmare that is all too specatularly realised, the first movie remains one of the most persistent fears for those averse to flying, depicting an international flight go down in a freak accident in a premonition by high schooler Alex Browning. If you've ever had the pre-flight jitters in any capacity, then Final Destination embeds itself deep into your brain and turns on that irrational, primal fear like nothing else.

The car pile up, the bridge collapse, and the speedway accident all serve their purposes well and have their places for different audience fears: but the flight formula was the true perfect storm.
