Some sci-fi films are easy to unpack, and don't require the audience to bring a protractor, two rulers, and a few dictionaries with them to the multiplex in order to understand proceedings.

Yes the prequels may get bogged down by the intricacies of intergalactic trade tariffs, but in essence the Star Wars movies are a story of good homegrown decency triumphing over the fascist forces of evil (no matter how many subversions the director of Brick tries to pack into them).

But occasionally the genre's inherent power to transcend standard straightforward storytelling tropes results in movies which screw with audience expectations, twist and turn unexpectedly, and are ultimately almost impossible to unpack even for the most seasoned sci-fi fans.

This isn't the first time WhatCulture has done a deep dive into the stranger ends of sci-fi, and hopefully won't be the last, so here are another ten sci-fi movies than no one actually understands...

From the director of 2014's coming-of-age drama Mud, 2011's (maybe) apocalyptic psychodrama Take Shelter sees the seemingly always at least a little unstable Michael Shannon play a family man plagued by inexplicable visions of a forthcoming extinction event of biblical proportions.

Is Zod losing his mind, or seeing the future thanks to a helping hand from God? If it's the latter, why was he chosen, and if it's the former, what's going on with the metaphorically charged ending?

"Who knows" is the resounding answer from the film's director, who says he had a definite interpretation of the ending in mind and has been humbled by the myriad readings which the film has prompted from sci-fi fans.
