5. The Congress

Coming from Ari Folman, the visionary Waltz With Bashir director, 2013's The Congress is a strange and trippy Stanislaw Lem adaptation which makes Stalker look like Star Wars with its convoluted backstory and bizarre cast of characters.

Starring a typically superb Robin Wright, the film moves the original novel's futuristic hell-scape from an authoritarian dystopia to a dark satire of the entertainment industry set in a desolate rotoscoped image of Hollywood.

Slipping between filmmaking styles, the story moves at a clip and manages to take aim at everything from the movie business to global governments, but that doesn't mean you won't require a trip to Wikipedia after viewing it to understand the plot of what you just watched.
