10 More Star Wars Changes George Lucas Made That Were Completely Justified
1. The Blinking Dianoga - A New Hope
Though many fans were horrified by Lucas adding CGI eyelids to the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi - and honestly, who could blame them? - there's another ocular-related change that actually makes total sense.
In A New Hope's iconic trash compactor sequence, Luke, Han, and Leia (Carrie Fisher) are briefly shown being observed and eventually attacked by a creature known as a dianoga.
We see it pop out of the water and watch the trio with its large, stalked eye, but for A New Hope's 2004 DVD, the dianoga was digitally altered in order to blink.
In the original version of the scene, it was incredibly obvious we were looking at a not-so-great prop that didn't remotely feel "alive," but adding something as simple as a blink immediately made the creature seem more tactile and present in the scene.
Now, it's a believable enough living thing rather than... a big eye on a stick, so it's tough to begrudge Lucas this change, as minor as it might be.
