10 More Times The Movie Killer Was Hiding In Plain Sight
8. Nick Ruskin - Kiss The Girls
In this snazzy thriller, forensic psychologist Alex Cross desperately tracks his kidnapped niece, held captive by a serial killer known only as Casanova. Cross zeroes in on a slimy Californian plastic surgeon but when he proves to be a slippery red herring instead, survivor Kate McTernan finally remembers the location in the woods where she was being held. This successfully flushes out the main suspect, Will Rudolph. Case solved? Not quite - it seems there are two killers.
Right in the nick of time, Cross matches handwriting from a post card sent by the killer to that of police detective Nick Ruskin. It's a clever move having two villains, especially one that's a clean-cut, square-jawed hero type.
As Casanova's a cop, he knows exactly how to conceal evidence and stall the investigation, leading to the first big clue; there are no prints, fibres, hair or any incriminating bodily fluids found at the scene.
Secondly, after Kate escapes, she holds a press conference, where Cross cleverly observes, "If he's not here, he's watching, I'll guarantee you." Ruskin is indeed there, basking in the attention like most movie-psychos. Still need another hint?
The final clue comes in a phone call between the two villains. Rudolph contacts Ruskin during the investigation, saying: "I thought you'd be out, busy... " Rudolph knows full well that Ruskin is a cop and assumes he's tied up with the investigation. Killer cop? Now that really is in plain sight.
