10 More Upcoming Movies That Are Already Doomed
1. Magazine Dreams
Magazine Dreams premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival to predominantly positive reviews for its intense and insightful look into the world of competitive bodybuilding.
The only problem? Its problematic star.
Though Jonathan Majors' performance as bodybuilder Killian Maddox received rave reviews and even courted early Oscar consideration, the film's release strategy was derailed a few months later when assault and harassment allegations were levelled against the actor.
While originally set to release on the awards-friendly date of December 8, 2023, last October Disney pulled the film from their calendar, and once Majors was found guilty in December, it was reported that Disney likely wouldn't be releasing the movie at all, either theatrically or on streaming.
As such, it's probable that Disney will sell the distribution rights off at some point, where after Magazine Dreams will likely be quietly dumped on VOD and evaporate into the ether. It's a disastrous if understandable result for a well-received film given Majors' involvement and the parallels between his hyper-aggressive protagonist and Majors' real life crimes.
Above all else, it's tough not to feel for writer-director Elijah Bynum, who had his big break scuttled by matters outside of his control.
