10 More Ways The Prequels Made Star Wars A Better Saga

7. Clonetroopers Were Commissioned By The Jedi

Star Wars 11

10 years ago (so around the event at the end of Phantom Menace) a Jedi, €˜Sifo Dyas€™ went to Kamino and commissioned the creation of a clone army. We also know that Count Dooku (going under his Sith name Darth Tyranus) approached Jango Fett with the deal to use his DNA as the template for the clones. Controversially Lucas never spelt out the actual events of whether Sifo Dyas, a confirmed genuine Jedi at some stage did actually commission the army or if it was actually Darth Sidious (those names are awfully similar, right?). I have always loved how Lucas doesn€™t get bogged down with this stuff and is more keen on keeping the story flowing - he gives us just enough to question events anyway and that€™s always a better route (take note of that Episode 7 writers!). Anyway, the clones are in place and indeed used in the Battle of Geonosis, just in time for the Clone Wars to begin once again, all at Palpatine€™s planning. So what do the clone troopers bring to the original trilogy other than a deeper understanding of what the Clone Wars were and what Obi-Wan was actually a general in? Well, for starters - and again only going by the events that happen in the films - you could suggest that all stormtroopers are still those clones under the helmets. After all, it€™s implied all stormtroopers in the original trilogy are about the same height, given that Luke is too short to be one. Cloning soldiers seems to be a system that works, especially given the effectiveness of Order 66 and the control the senate has over their troopers. Of course, Lucas has left this open to argument, given that he didn€™t change the voices of the stormtroopers in the original trilogy like he did with Boba Fett. So, post Revenge of the Sith, it seems likely that anyone can join the Empire and become a stormtrooper (given that they are over a certain height). I suppose it could be argued that the Jedi only used the existing clones and didn€™t commission anymore once they found out about it but I like to think Boba aggressively shut that place down when he got old enough. Now there€™s a spin off movie idea I could get on board with.
