10 Most Amazing Practical Movie Effects Of The 2010s

8. The Exo-Suits (Edge Of Tomorrow)

You'd be forgiven if you thought the underrated Edge Of Tomorrow was pure CGI all the way through, given how futuristic the whole thing looks. But it actually contains a surprising amount of in-camera and practical effects, with the film's Exo-Suits being a particular standout in this regard.

Why? The design team actually built them. Around 70 of them, in fact. Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and the rest of the cast wore these suits for their many, many action sequences, which helped elevate the actors' performances - since they had something real to interact with.

These suits apparently weighed between 85 to 125 pounds, and it took over four months to build as many as the crew needed. The suits were fully operational, and the actors could run, jump, and had full mobility while wearing them, so no CGI enhancements (besides removing wires) were required - as illustrated by glancing at one of the film's many behind-the-scenes shots.

Tom Cruise has stated that it initially took a team of four people 30 minutes just to get him into the damn thing, which further illustrates how committed the crew was to making the movie feel as real as possible.

They could have easily used CGI (which would have eliminated that 30-minute dress-up time), but they weren't interested in a quick solution - they wanted a tangible Exo-Suit that would further sell the gritty, futuristic vibe they were aiming for.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
