I know most folks consider this to be a "classic" comedy, and that John Candy has officially become an indisputable comedy icon since his passing, so criticizing this movie whatsoever is going to raise some ire. But c'mon. From start to finish, this film is an exercise in audience anger management.

We're supposed to feel bad for the hapless slob Del (Candy) when Neal (Steve Martin) finally erupts and goes off on him with an epic tirade after the umpteenth time Del screws up his plans to get home to his family for Christmas. Because Christmas is a time for forgiveness and togetherness and blah blah blah.

But you don't get to simply wipe out 90 minutes of rude, obnoxious behavior just because the jolly guy with the ceaseless Christmas spirit starts moping around after another adult chastises him for his tactlessness. That's not how things work.

Yes, Steve Martin's character is a little uptight and could stand to loosen up just a bit, but you can't tell me any real live person in his shoes wouldn't be just as irritated. And the fact that we're not supposed to fume right along with him is simply unforgiveable.
