10 Most Anxiety-Inducing Horror Movies EVER

7. A Quiet Place

Released in 2018, John Krasinski’s horror hit A Quiet Place has a simple premise that may not stand up to a lot of logical scrutiny, but remains as brutally effective in sheer primal terms as Green Room's ingenious "you're stuck in a room surrounded by neo Nazis on all sides, what do" conceit.

Some ideas are simply resonant in a bone-deep way. And A Quiet Place's tale of a family attempting to survive in post apocalyptic America by being as quiet as possible to avoid detection by sound-sensitive beasts is one of them.

The film begins brutally and never lets up throughout its almost silent, taut runtime. First off, the opening sequence kills one of the kids, breaking an unspoken cardinal rule of horror and making it clear that no one is safe.

From thereon out, the tiny cast means there are no disposable victims to off (hey there, Bird Box), whilst the family unit provides an inherently compelling set of characters who the audience feels compelled to protect. After all, no one would cheer on the wanton murder of groups of delinquent teens in slasher films if they were a tight-knit family unit.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
