The Theory

As pointed out by one theory, the first synopsis for Avengers 4 mentioned the heroes understanding "how fragile this reality is" in the wake of the snap, and suggests that the reason for the fragility is down to Thanos messing with the order of things.

As Doctor Strange established, messing with time (by using the Time Stone) can have grave consequences (which is why Mordo ultimately turns on the Sorcerors) and the suggestion is that when Thanos turns back time to stop the Mind Stone being destroyed, he interfered with the natural order of things. He "broke" time.

As an extension of that theory, it could be that Thanos is made to pay for that interference by entities more invested in the preservation of order, such as the Cosmic Entities (including the Living Tribunal, the Beyonder and Eternity. What if they turn up to make him answer to his crimes?

Why It's Believable

The idea of Time being broken certainly matches up to logic established in Doctor Strange. Wong refers to Strange "breaking" the space-time continuum at one point and Mordo says "Temporal manipulations can create branches in time... Unstable dimensional openings. Spatial paradoxes, time loops!" These are learned men, they know what they're talking about and surely there must be consequences of some sort.

The idea of Cosmic Entities turning up to join the fight against Thanos would absolutely fit this need for crime and retribution and if we're ultimately headed to an MCU including Galactus, then these sorts of supreme beings need to be referenced more. We've had Dormammu already - now it's time for universal protectors.
