10 Most Controversial Oscar Wins Of All Time

1. Crash crash

Crash is controversial for two reasons. 1) It's a really rubbish film that should have been retitled "Racism for Dummies" and 2) It proved Conservative America wasn't ready to give a film detailing a homosexual relationship the biggest award. There's nothing wrong with thinking Brokeback Mountain didn't deserve the Best Picture nod, there were a fine selection of films released in 2005 - Walk the Line, Good Night and Good Luck, A History of Violence and The New World - but did anybody apart from the esteemed members of the Academy really think Crash was the best film they saw that year? Crash attempts to deal with controversial subject matter also, but it is done in such a melodramatic, farcical tone of hysteria that it all feels false and manipulative. Crash attempts to define racial tension with sentimentality and spirituality in the form of a Hollywood fantasy that refuses to dare ask "why?" It's no secret that Hollywood and large portions of America don't "do" homosexuality and Sean Penn only received his Best Actor award for playing Harvey Milk as a token gesture. People can harp on and on about how there was no agenda or discrimination in the awarding of the Best Picture prize in 2005, and that Crash was the best film that year, but we all know it's a lie. The Academy prevented the best film of the year from taking centre stage on Hollywood's crowning night because of their disgusting prejudices. Shame on them.
