4. James Franco & Anne Hathaway As Hosts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82fIpQjOxmc In 2011, Oscar producers hoped that they could rescue flagging ratings by bringing in two youthful hosts to liven things up a bit, while not upsetting the more decrepit members of the Academy. James Franco and Anne Hathaway, then, seemed like a fine choice, given that they were both likeable, talented actors and would surely have a nice contrast of personalities. That they certainly did, because while James Franco appeared lethargic, even stoned for most of the evening, Hathaway was forced to try and over-compensate, coming across as annoyingly chirpy, like a Disney character pulled into real life. Their lack of chemistry made for a cringe-inducing evening, and the various gags used to try and perk things up became increasingly desperate. Easily one of the worst hosting jobs in Academy history, you have to feel sorry for Hathaway; she tries her hardest, but Franco doesn't seem like he's really present at all.
