10 Most Disappointing Action Movie Sequels Ever
9. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
Obviously, nobody sings the praises of 1995's Mortal Kombat adaptation for its powerhouse acting performances and technical craftsmanship, but the movie has retained a strong following for the last 25 years as an unashamed cult favorite.
It isn't a great movie by any means, but there's an undeniable charm about how cheesy the whole thing is, with the hammy dialogue and over-the-top acting backed by some strong (for the time, at least) production design and visual effects.
Mortal Kombat would go on to earn over $120m at the box office on an $18m budget, and a sequel was swiftly announced, which turned out to cost double the amount and turn out to be twice as bad. Annihilation has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 2% for a very good reason, as it somehow managed to take everything that people enjoyed about the first installment and somehow make it much, much worse without even the slightest hint of the self-awareness or tongue-in-cheek approach that drew people in the first time around.
