10 Most Disappointing Endings In Movie History

2. Lucy

The Matrix Revolutions
Universal Pictures

Luc Besson, director of Lucy, has had a patchy career. He’s directed pop culture favourite The Fifth Element, the fantastic Leon: The Professional, and Taken, but he’s also been responsible for stinkers like Arthur and the Invisibles, Valerian, and The Family. And despite the film’s interesting (if scientifically inaccurate) premise, Lucy is another one of his mistakes.

Scarlett Johannson accidentally ingests a drug that enhances her brain power, and starts to display some strange abilities like telepathy. As she gets more, she eventually becomes powerful enough to alter her own body shape, and she merges with computers to become an extra-powerful supercomputer that will contain all the knowledge of the universe. She then time-travels and witnesses the Big Bang, then reaches 100% brain capacity and transcends our dimension, becoming one with the universe.

It may take a couple of rewatches to completely get what happens - Lucy has one of the craziest endings to a Hollywood film ever, only really exceeded by the next film on this list, and it makes what was an interesting premise into a bizarre and over-the-top finale that doesn’t even make much sense. It thinks it’s being the next 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it just feels more like Luc Besson had a few too many of those drugs himself.
