10 Most Disappointing Stephen King Movies
5. Graveyard Shift
Graveyard Shift is another creepy short story from early in King’s career that in the right hands could’ve yielded a terrific movie. The supporting cast includes Brad Dourif and Andrew Divoff, but unfortunately the director is Ralph Singleton (who also produced the Pet Sematary movies) who after this disaster never returned to the director’s chair.
Essentially a down and dirty exploitation movie, Graveyard Shift’s plot involves a blue collar hero who accepts a job at “Bachman Mills” even after someone kills a rat in front of him at the interview. It turns out the mill has a rodent problem to end all rodent problems – in the basement lurks a giant rat (with talons and leathery wings) that proceeds to kill off the dumb characters for the rest of the film.
There’s no reason to bother with this time-waster, but if you do watch then don’t miss Brad Dourif’s turn as “The Exterminator.” Given to bug-eyed ranting about how the Viet Cong used to feed American POWs to rats, Brad’s appalled when nobody takes him seriously. “I ain’t one of those baby-burning flashback f**k-ups you see Bruce Dern playing,” he says, “so quit your grinning!”
