10 Most Disappointing Villains From Otherwise Great Movies
7. Silver Samurai - The Wolverine
The Great Movie: Taking Logan to Japan, The Wolverine was largely successful by stepping away from his traditional adventures with the X-Men. Instead of focusing on things like the publics perception of mutants, it focused on Logan himself. Despite its larger than life hero, the film remained largely a grounded character study with a few action scenes thrown in.
The Disappointing Villain: Running contrary to this, however, was the villain of the piece. After stifling a number of foes, the real antagonist is revealed as Ichiro Yashida, the old man who Logan saved in the beginning, who wanted to steal his powers via a giant robotic samurai suit?! That doesnt exactly fall in line with this rest of the film. To make matters worse, the actual Silver Samurai suit looks completely stupid.
Yashida as the villain came out of nowhere. Hes thought dead for much of the film and his early appearances paint him as grateful to Logan and benevolent towards him. The twist of him being behind everything feels more like a gotcha moment than an earned development since its so different from the Yashida thats initially depicted.
Making things worse was Logans much more exciting fight with Shingen that precedes Yashida's reveal. Though he was also underdeveloped, Shingen was much more present as a villain, and their fight offered exactly what the final conflict should have been.
