10 Most Diverse Directors In Hollywood

8. Ang Lee

You never quite know what you're going to get with an Ang Lee film. In the middle of the 90s he was directing period pieces in the form of Sense and Sensibility, but by the turn of the millennium he was working on Hulk (aka an unequivocal CGI eyesore).

To this day he is still probably best known for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, one of the most popular martial arts films ever made. So popular that it was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, a feat unmatched by a non-English language film until the recent success of Roma.

So within the span of eight years, he had gone from Jane Austen to Stan Lee, via 18th century China. What was next for him? Brokeback Mountain of course - a film of immense emotional and sexual complexity, widely regarded as one of the very best romantic dramas of recent times.

2012's Life of Pi saw Ang Lee winning the Academy Award for Best Director. And while it's not regarded as his best film by many, the technical and visual achievements of the film alone was enough to sway Oscar voters.

Now we come to 2019 and Gemini Man - a script that sat in development hell for almost two decades. And it shows.

It is far and away the weakest film in Ang Lee's career and at times the de-ageing of Will Smith is downright disturbing. The action is extremely tame and the plot is as thin as any plot possibly can be.

It's a true shame that this is the most recent output from Ang Lee, as everyone knows just how talented he is in a range of genres. Hopefully his next project brings him back to the level we know he could and should be at.

Marlon Loria hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
