10 Most Divisive Films Of All Time
6. Eyes Wide Shut
Many of Stanley Kubrick's finest films were once met with deep divisions from critics and audiences alike. While nowadays no one disputes the fact the 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon and The Shining are all masterpieces, at the time of their releases sharp divisions existed between those who loved them and those who despised them.
The same can't be said for his 1999 swansong, Eyes Wide Shut, his story of infidelity and sinister secret societies starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Its defenders lambast the marketing behind the film, claiming it as another masterpiece; a deep and thoughtful study of human nature, blending conspiratorial elements with a complex understanding of truth and love.
The haters view it as "semi-intellectual nonsense", deriding the slow pacing, excessive running time and wooden performances from the two leads. Eyes Wide Shut is "plotless rubbish" which makes little to no sense and goes absolutely nowhere - slowly. Once again, IMDB user reviews show a sharp split between 1 and 10 star user reviews, giving the impression that audiences watched two completely different films.
