Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi is an unusual case of divisive movies, representing what is perhaps the starkest contrast in the history of cinema between the critics and the fans. Such is the disparity of opinion between these two groups that it will no doubt be discussed for many years to come.

One thing which stands out in many of the positive reviews from the critics is their assertion that "fanatics will no doubt love it" . Considered by many critics to be one of the most powerful and emotional contributions to the Star Wars franchise, they are keen to point out to readers that "the devoted will no doubt be delighted", and that have to "unlearn what they have learned."

Nothing could have been further from the truth. If the critical reaction seemed to prove that industry critics are completely dislocated from the fandom, the fans themselves were almost unanimous in their disapproval of how writer-director Rian Johnson handled the material.

From Luke's complete about turn as a character to General "Mary Poppins" Leia, the fan consensus was that Disney had constructed a nightmarish behemoth which has all but destroyed the franchise. Accusations that Disney were injecting the franchise with progressive politics - claims which were supported by statements from Johnson and producer Kathleen Kennedy - undermined the fans' approval even more.
