Though it's in the early stages of release, the Hugh Jackman-led The Greatest Showman has stirred up a whirlwind of controversy off its subject matter alone, with a firm divide emerging between those who are familiar with the real-life practices of Jackman's character, and those who just want to see a glitzy, jovial Hollywood musical.

Indeed, while The Greatest Showman may look carefree, lavishly-designed and fun - and has managed some particularly impressive audience scores, including an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes - it's hiding a deep, dark secret that 20th Century Fox certainly hoped would never hit the headlines.

P.T. Barnum (Jackman), the movie's central character, was reportedly responsible for the capture, abuse and mistreatment of animals, keeping them caged up and making them respect him through the use of fear tactics and pain.

The movie obviously ignores this part of Barnum's life, and has been accused by many - including PETA - of "romanticizing" a man who built his career on the back of numerous questionable practices.

We're yet to see if this controversy will affect The Greatest Showman in the long run, but for now, cries for people to boycott the film are ringing just as loudly as the munching of popcorn by those who don't know about Barnum's history, or just don't care.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
