10 Most Divisive Movies Of 2024

4. Alien: Romulus

Longlegs Nicolas Cage
20th Century Studios

Though Alien: Romulus was the best-reviewed Alien film in decades, the response from the series' die-hard fanbase was decidedly more mixed.

And this ultimately comes down to how content folks were with the film being a fairly shameless, unambitious grab-bag of the series' greatest hits - albeit a technically glossy and well-acted one.

For Alien fans desperate to see the franchise try something new, though, this was pretty underwhelming, and even many who mostly enjoyed Romulus still found the "memberberries" and general nostalgia-baiting a little much by the end - especially when that classic Aliens line is invoked at a critical moment.

It is a basic assembly Alien movie that's doing precious little new while leaning far too keenly on the series' greatest successes, even if it's an entertaining enough romp while you're watching it regardless.

Such is the recipe for the third Alien movie in a row to sharply split fans down the middle, even if Romulus was certainly less contentious than either Prometheus or Alien: Covenant.
