Raking in a massive $1.153 billion at the box office, Captain America: Civil War was the mega-hit of 2016, ranking not only as last year’s highest grossing film but the twelfth highest grossing film of all time too. Colossal financial success isn’t exactly unusual for a film of Civil War’s genre but it was also accompanied by tidal wave of critical praise too, earning an impressive 90% Rotten Tomatoes rating and even hailed by some as one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Naturally, Civil War had everything you’d expect from a superhero movie – car chases, blistering fight scenes, wisecracking humour – but what set it apart from other films was its surprisingly emotional core.

Much of this centred around the disclosure of a huge secret that saw Bucky revealed as the killer (albeit whilst under the control of Hydra) of Tony Stark’s parents and that Captain America had kept this bit of rather important information from Tony for quite some time.

Already beset by internal conflict, the truth about Howard and Maria Stark’s deaths well and truly cemented the warring factions between the Avengers and, no less, at a time when the world needs Earth’s Mightiest Heroes the most.
