10 Most Emotionally Devastating Movie Moments Of 2016
4. X-Men: Apocalypse – Magneto’s Family Dies
X-Men: Apocalypse wasn’t without its faults of course, but it did manage to achieve greatness with one particularly heart-wrenching scene involving Magneto and his family.
By this point in the franchise, he’s a far different mutant than the one we saw last in Days of Future Past having since moved on from trying to assassinate American presidents and emigrated to Poland where he is lives the quiet life with his wife and daughter. Until, that is, he employs his magnetic powers to save a co-worker from an accident at his factory job which unfortunately tips off the authorities as to his whereabouts.
Using Magneto’s daughter as a lure, a group of policemen armed with arrows are about to apprehend Magneto when his kid uses the mutant powers inherited from her dad to cause a flock of birds to fly into a frenzy. Amidst the confusion, a butterfingered policeman accidentally shoots an arrow, spearing both the wife and daughter right through their hearts.
A heartbroken Magneto’s rage and grief unleashes his powers and garrottes the policemen using only his dead daughter’s necklace as a weapon.
According to the X-Men: Apocalypse’s DVD commentary, director Bryan Singer originally the scene was originally even more emotional with the added tear-jerker element of Magneto tearfully singing a Polish lullaby to his dead family. Thankfully, for us more misty eyed moviegoers this part of the scene was cut during the editing process as Singer felt it added a touch too much heartbreak to an already very sad moment.
