When a film hires Brad Pitt, its studio best prepare for one heck of a bill. And for starring in World War Z, Pitt bagged himself a pretty decent sum of $14 million according to most sources.

By all accounts, World War Z was supposed to be the biggest and most costly mistake horror had ever made. Originally only signed off with a $125 million budget, various delays, production issues and hasty script rewrites led to this quickly spiralling up to $190 million by the time the film was ready to be released.

Set in a world on the brink of apocalypse, the film follows Pitt's character, former UN official Gerry Lane, as he travels around the world looking for a way to stop the approaching zombie pandemic.

Despite all the issues off camera, the rewrites and delays proved to be vital in turning the film's fortunes around and it opened to a very warm reception from critics. It might have ended up deviating pretty wildly from the original 2006 novel, and certainly suffered from a pretty anti-climatic ending, but its $540 million box office was a scarcely believable turnaround for a film so many had considered a write off before.
