5. A Thousand Words - $40 Million
Eddie Murphy has made a lot of people laugh over the years. Whether in films like Shrek, Beverly Hills Cop, or Doctor Dolittle, or with his stand-up, a lot of people have Murphy to thank for a lot of good times.
So maybe we shouldn't be so hard on him for this stinker of a movie from 2012.
To give A Thousand Words some credit, its premise is actually quite intriguing. Murphy plays a literary agent whose liberal use of language often gets him in trouble. He is then placed under a curse where he has a limit to the number of words he can use, forcing him to choose what he says carefully.
Unfortunately, not enough words were said to draw attention to this movie, as it drew just $22 million on a $40 million budget. Perhaps this was down to the negative critical reception A Thousand Words got.
Critics were not happy that the film removed Murphy's voice, which is kind of the reason anybody watches an Eddie Murphy movie in the first place. Without his wise cracks, the film lacked any real substance,
Silence might be golden, but this movie certainly wasn't.
