9. Rosemary's Baby- Rosemary's Impregnation

Roman Polanski gives the scene where Rosemary is impregnated by Satan a surreal touch by combining the German Expressionist style of filmmaking with a sense of realsim by having her in an ordinary situation. Plus any movie that features someone get raped by Satan gets an automatic placement on any list of this type. It's this duality that is at the very heart of the movie. Polanski spends the first hour of Rosemary's Baby showing the audience a very normal story about an ordinary couple then completely catches the viewer off guard with this scene. Everything is going along fine and the film really hasn't been scary at all then, out of nowhere, everything becomes completely bizarre. This adds more impact to the moment than anything else Polanski could have done and helped secure his film as one of the most frightening of all time.
