Having thoroughly ensured Washington would have a tough time rebuilding, Roland Emmerich duly moved north up the East Coast to unleash the onset of a new ice age upon the Big Apple in his 2004 effort, effectively taking Deep Impact's approach and rendering it with a more visceral edge as another tsunami weaves its way through the streets leaving destruction in its wake.

It's far from the only city to meet its maker, but once again, Manhattan takes something of a battering as Jake Gyllenhaal and Emmy Rossum get trapped in the maelstrom around them, fighting to survive through various local landmarks including the New York Public Library.

Though attention is split back to Washington - where this president fares less well than Bill Pullman previously did - it's really around the Hudson River that this film comes alive with unfettered disaster chaos.
