Audiences would have had to sleepwalk into Jonathan Liebesman's Marines-versus-aliens action piece to have not figured that the City of Angels was in store for yet another beating, and the film duly delivers in spades as Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez and company attempt to rebel an attack from extra-terrestrials and in the process help turn the city into a raging warzone.

Primarily tracking its core group through the destruction and devastation around them, it's arguably one of the more artless assaults in terms of cinematic carnage, but the director at least hones in on scale with a keener effect than most, with his team stumbling beneath the shadows of looming wreckage more often than not throughout.

It's smoke-strewn and sufficiently overblown enough to ensure that little of cinematic LA is left standing come the end.
