The Marvel Cinematic Universe is unlike any other shared universe in the entire movie industry. With 23 movies spanning over 13 years, with almost half that again set to release over the next few years, and at least a dozen series coming to Disney+ in the near future, the MCU has created for itself the opportunity and the platform to develop characters like never before.

Tony Stark's sacrifice at the end of the Infinity Saga meant so much more because he has been developed on screen for over ten years, and as with the majority of the characters in the franchise, fans fell completely in love with him.

Throughout the MCU's first three phases, and so far in the fourth, there have been dozens of amazing characters introduced, with many deserving of the adoration of fans the world over. However, this does not apply to every single character.

There are some that are simply hated by these same fans. For some characters, this was supposed to be the case, as there has to be some form of evil for the heroes to go up against.

Other cases however, have seen characters simply fail to make a connection with fans, and regardless of what side of the fight they were on, found themselves hated for any number of different reasons.

Before Taika Waititi and Thor: Ragnarok shook the MCU to its very core, the Thor franchise was the weakest of the bunch. Kenneth Branagh's outing wasn't offensive, but it wasn't mind-blowing, and The Dark World is still the consensus pick as the worst of all 23 movies.

There were many aspects to why these movies underwhelmed, one of which was Natalie Portman's Jane Foster. The astrophysicist simply failed to click with audiences thanks to very little character development, and two scripts that left a lot to be desired for the Oscar winning actress.

Even Portman herself reportedly complained of her character being boring, and offering little more to the movies than being a love interest for Thor. She was simply a damsel in distress that needed saving, which was even more infuriating considering her background in the comics.

It came as something of a shock when the Black Swan actress was confirmed to be returning for Thor: Love and Thunder, but with the character set to lift Mjolnir, and under the guidance of the magical Taika Waititi, Jane at least has a chance to change the minds of MCU fans everywhere.
