10 Most Historically Inaccurate War Movies Ever Made

Remember this film? Probably not as it turned out a flop. Nevertheless, it stars a Canadian and French couple played by Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard and tells the story of two undercover spies working for the allies who fall in love on a secret mission, after which they decide to get married and start a new life in London.

However, in an O’Henry twist, Brad Pitt’s character is told by British officials that his new wife has actually been an undercover German officer this whole time, and that he must kill her or be suspected of treason and killed himself. Horrified, he sets off on a desperate mission to prove her innocence…

Something just doesn't add up about this one though. At the height of WW2, if the British government suspected a foreign citizen of being a Nazi spy, they would have been far too paranoid to take chances by entrusting the killing to her equally foreign husband, let alone give the latter free reign to carry out mysterious night-time flights to northern France (which is what he then proceeds to do). The whole thing just seems very unrealistic.

Speaking on the historical basis for the film, writer Steven Knight explained how he heard it from a mother of an old girlfriend whose brother had been in the Special Operations unit of the British Intelligence services during WW2. It could be true, but as with most stories involving intelligence agencies, it remains uncorroborated.
