2. The Witches (1990)
The more and more I think about it, the more sure I am that Jim Henson came into this world to ingrain unforgettable, terrifying images onto the brains of kids everywhere. Why else would he need to conjure up the kind of creature you're seeing in the picture above?
The Witches, which also happens to be the second Roald Dahl adapted flick to make this list, is disturbing beyond belief. Then again, it was directed by Nicolas Roeg.
The Witches is, without a doubt, a horror movie for children. There's no mistaking the way that Roeg (best known for his terrifying Don't Look Now) uses his camera to emphasis the material: he's shooting The Witches like he'd shoot something aimed for adults. And it works. By "works," of course, I mean it has frightened pretty much everybody who has ever seen it to levels beyond their comprehension. Anjelica Huston is excellent, as usual, but Henson's make-up seals the deal: a true horror movie for kids, if ever there was one.
