10 Most Immersive Movies Ever

4. Avatar

The film credited with bringing 3D entertainment into the mainstream, the good news about Avatar is that you don't need to watch it in that format to feel completely immersed in its world.

Its environments are so vibrant and its CGI characters are so vividly realised and fluid in their movements that the movie feels like it's popping off the screen even when viewed in standard 2D. This is one of those movies you put on to show off the power of your 4K TV, and you'll convince everybody in the room that such a pricey gadget is worth investing in after no more than a few minutes of footage.

Visuals aside, the other keys to Avatar's success are the character of Jake Sully, and the concept of plugging an ordinary human into the fantastical world of Pandora.

Sam Worthington really doesn't work when he's playing the mythical hero (Clash Of The Titans) or the badass soldier (Terminator Salvation), but what he is good at is playing... a normal dude. It sounds like a back-handed compliment, but Worthington is so bland that he's the perfect surrogate, and it's extremely easy to put yourself in his shoes and experience this amazing new planet along with him.

Avatar gets a lot of criticism for its story, but damn, watch it on a massive TV and its sumptuous visual effects wash over you like a comforting warm shower at the end of a long cold day. There's a reason why Pandora: The World Of Avatar is one of Disney's top attractions: James Cameron created an experience that feels good to explore.
