10 Most Important Directors Of The 21st Century (So Far)

6. David Fincher

Bad Taste Peter Jackson

Despite arriving on the directorial scene with the disappointing, albeit somewhat misunderstood Alien 3, David Fincher has gone on to become one of the most popular and well-respected helmsmen on the planet.

A meticulous craftsman who pays attention to every minute detail on screen, Fincher has gone on to become a box office draw in his own right. Fincher’s name sells tickets, something that’s increasingly harder to do as Hollywood continues to double down on brand names and shared fictional universes to shift seats.

Would people have cared for an American remake of the already fantastic The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, had David Fincher’s name not been attached from the early going? It’s highly unlikely.

Having rebounded in the late 90s with influential hits Se7en and Fight Club, the former music video director has since gone on to release some bonafide ‘movie of the decade’ contenders in the form of the Gone Girl, Zodiac and The Social Network.

As one of few people able to bring smart, tense crime thrillers and stripped-back character pieces to multiplex audiences, Fincher has built upon rocky foundations to become one of the 21st Century’s most revered directors.
