9. All-Consuming Lust - The Lion King (1994)
The Lion King does not shy away from the difficult topics. This is a film that starts with The Circle of Life - a song which does little else than make us confront our own mortality.
If you didn't already know, it's based on Shakespeare's tragedy of Hamlet - notoriously one of his bleaker plays. A scheming uncle, a father killed right before his son's eyes, and a hit put out on the grieving child. The human version is in no way suitable for younger audiences, but for some reason it's fine if it's lions.
If things weren't edgy enough, we should also come to terms with the hanky-panky embedded in this film's subtext.
Simba and Nala are childhood friends who, when Mufasa's majordomo Zazu informs them that they're 'betrothed,' are disgusted by the idea. It is a bit early for the cubs to be considering marriage.
Fortunately, the disgust has worn off by the time Nala encounters a now-adult Simba, who had disappeared after his father's death and was presumed dead. Very quickly, Nala's mind appears on one thing in particular. "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?" may be more of a double entendre than we first realised, if that tumble down the hill is anything to go by.
She's so preoccupied by this newfound lust, that Simba returning to oust his tyrannical uncle only really crops up as an afterthought.
Look, we get it - the only eligible bachelor left in the Pride Lands is Scar. Anyone would look good given those circumstances.
