5. The Simpsons Meme-Gate

People really seem to hate The Simpsons these days. If you have the audacity to express your enjoyment for the show's recent seasons, you tend to find yourself dog-piled by edgy nostalgia-addicts who won't watch anything past season 19 and who believe the show ought to be killed for its own good.

Still, 4 million people still watch every episode and it's still very capable of making magic. It's not like the formula has changed that much.

This week saw the show go super meta in new episode “The Girl on the Bus,” in which the writers decided to turn the fanbase's penchant for memes back in on itself. During a text message conversation on screen, Homer Simpson himself used the most famous Simpsons meme, of him reversing into a hedge. None of it makes any sense, but it's a smart move to get some attention for the show.

In an even more meta move, the official Simpsons Twitter account shared a GIF of Homer using the GIF.
