10 Most Insane Things That Ever Happened At Comic-Con
Scott Pilgrim was never going to be a mainstream hit, even with the Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright and Superbad star Michael Cera on board. Loaded with video game references, filmed at a break-neck pace familiar to pop culture junkies only, and with an ensemble cast of hate-'em-or-love-'em young performers not to mention a sideline in hipster indie rock it's not the most audience-friendly blockbuster.
Scott Pilgrim Vs The World's ideal audience, in fact, is the sort of people who go to Comic-Con, even more than any other film promoted at SDCC. So it was an inspired moment when, during a panel to publicise the movie, Edgar Wright stood up at the end and invited certain lucky members of crowd to follow him to the nearby Balboa Theatre, where they got to watch the film.
So, technically, Scott Pilgrim premiered at Comic-Con, to an audience of excitable geeks. No prior announcement had been made if you had a Mario-style 1-UP badge handed to you as you entered the panel, you got in. Fans watched the film with its director and stars, before any other member of the public saw it, followed up by performances from bands who were on the soundtrack.
