10 Most Intense Gunfights In Westerns

9. Bone Tomahawk

A terrifically underrated film, Bone Tomahawk manages to blend the story and terror of a cannibal horror film into what is undeniably a western. The story follows a sheriff played by Kurt Russell, who with a team of three others sets out to bring back the townspeople who have been taken by a tribe of cannibals. S. Craig Zahler handles the film perfectly, with plenty of great character moments between scenes of thrilling gunfights and stomach churning horror.

There are few gunfights to be found admittedly, but when they are present they are fantastic. The best one comes when our heroes finally make it to the Valley of the Starving Men. Russell, Mathew Fox and Richard Jenkins take up position by some bushes at the base of the tribe's mountain home. Then without warning, all hell breaks loose.

It is gun against weapons made of stone and bone. The suddenness of the scene is shocking, both in how it begins and how it ends. As everyone is firing away it is hard to make out what is happening. Only when we are finally given time to breathe do we finally piece together exactly what had happened. A character looses a hand and we barely notice at first. It sounds messy, but it's so expertly done that the whole fight feels sickeningly realistic.

The film is not for the faint of heart, but it's one of the most rewarding watches of recent years.
