10 Most Intense Gunfights In Westerns

4. The Magnificent Seven (1960)

Open Range 2003 Ending
United Artists

A classic that no remake could top, despite ironically being a remake itself. Everything that was said about the remake could be applied to this version. The only differences are that it isn't as visually spectacular as the remake, that everything you see is real (there were indeed that many people on set and doing those stunts) and that the film around the action is also very good.

This time having to save a town from a gang of Mexican outlaws, led by Eli Wallach, the Seven hold up in the town. We all know what is coming, but that doesn't make it any less terrific. The film had built up to the finale perfectly and there is no denying that the gunfight delivered in spades.

Among the main cast were huge names, including Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and James Coburn. This made it surprising and shocking when some of them died in the battle. It keeps the audience on their toes as to who will make it and who won't. We also have to acknowledge that it is seven men against an army. A novelty now, but for the era it rarely got so epic.

The violence is brief and tame by today's standards. But it doesn't need to be more than that. It is an effective, white knuckle moment that will stick with you long after the credits roll.
