10 Most Intense Gunfights In Westerns
2. Tombstone
There simply isn't any modern western film as good as Tombstone was. Telling the story of Wyatt Earp, from his rise all the way through the battle at the O.K. Corral, the film put to shame the other film based on Earp released around the same time. This could be attributed to the all star cast, or that the film was directed by First Blood Part 2's George P. Cosmatos, or maybe it was just the solid writing. Whatever the answer, the action scenes certainly helped.
Picking just one gunfight in Tombstone feels sacrilegious. But, if it has to be one of them, then it must be the battle at the O.K. Corral. History comes to life in the form of an intense Hollywood action scene at least. In one of the best action scenes of the 1990s, Tombstone has our heroes (Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot and Bill Paxton) marching through town to take out a number of the 'Cowboys' gang.
What follows is masterful chaos. Both sides have a surprise for the other - one cowboy uses the fact that he is unarmed to get armed and behind our heroes. Kilmer's Doc Holiday, caring little for death, marches closer and closer with every gunshot, much to the horror of the gang.
