10 Most Intense Thrillers From The Last Decade

1. Prisoners

Prisoners Jake Gyllenhaal Paul Dano
Warner Bros.

Although he's gone on to make brilliant films like Arrival and Sicario, what Denis Villeneuve did with the incredibly intense, Prisoners, still goes unrivalled in his magnificent career. Released in 2011, Prisoners focuses on the search for a young girl who was kidnapped. By whom? No-one quite knows, but Detective Loki, played by Jake Gyllenhaal and the child's father, Keller Dover. played by Hugh Jackman, are determined to find out.

With a story crafted together by prolific screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski, Prisoners takes a hard look at the depravity of human beings and asks audiences, what wouldn't you do to find your missing child? It's an extremely unsettling movie, filled with an abundance of twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your sofa.

While many lauded Jackman for his rage-filled performance as a father hellbent on finding his daughter, Gyleenhaal's quiet, yet determined portrayal of Detective Loki is simply sensational. While Jackman's character is so blinded by his anger and own need forrevenge, Gylleenhaal plays Loki like someone who is solely focused on trying to piece the puzzle together before it's too late.

However, unlike Jackman, who seems like he's ready to explode at any minute, Gyllenhaal remains calm and collected for the most part, only showing true frustration when he's not given the support he needs to find the child. Prisoners really is an outstanding piece of work that - much like all great thrillers - will stand the test of time for years to come.
