9. Agent Tom Sawyer (Shane West) - League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen
It is easy to miss that Agent Sawyer was, in fact, Tom Sawyer as he only mentions his first name once in a quick scene. Still, it is a fact that this was indeed Mark Twains beloved character all grown up. So why does he make this list? It is simply because his inclusion in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is unnecessary and pointless. He was nowhere in the original comic and was completely out of place in the League. The argument stands that some think the movie needed an American character and Tom (referencing the story: Tom Sawyer: Detective) got that role. I tend not to agree with the American statement myself and look at the fact that most of the scenes with Tom were actually somewhat boring. The only stand out part with Tom in it was the sequence on the Nautilus that Quartermain was teaching him to shoot, and any number of characters could have handled that. I think Quartermain said it best in relation to Toms shooting. Shoot like and American, fire off a bunch of bullets and hope one of them hits the target. That was exactly what Tom Sawyers character felt like in this film, the filmmakers taking a shot and hoping he hit. However, none of his character from the Mark Twain novel was present. While some arguments about LOEG can extend to the other characters, you can at least see some basis of the original works there. Also, with a movie featuring so many characters it seems pointless to include another one just for the sake of Americanizing it. Quartermane had the shooting ability and could have carried the film all on his own (I mean it was Sean Connery for crying out loud). Sawyer was brash, arrogant, cocky, and pretty much all the things that make Americans look bad, but maybe that was the point.
