The Visit is one weird movie. There are a whole bunch of really jarring moments (naked grandma running around and scratching doors comes to mind) but no moment can top the fantastic final reveal.

The story basically goes that two kids are visiting their grandparents for the first time ever. Their mum had a big falling out with them several years ago which means the family has been split apart ever since, explaining why they’ve never met or talked or seen photos of each other.

Whilst staying at their grandparents’ house, the kids notice some incredibly weird things: the grandma likes to make the girl get in the oven, the grandfather stores used adult nappies in the shed, at night the grandma goes feral and bangs on doors - you know, that sort of thing. It all gets too much and the kids beg their mum to come and get them, turning the web-cam to show her their grandparents out in the yard.

It’s then that their mum tells them “those aren’t your grandparents.”

It all only gets more wild from there, with the girl finding the corpses of their real grandparents in the basement and finding out that the strangers they have been staying with all week are escapees from a local mental asylum. It really is, as you say, a bit mental.
