He's a long way away from the violent horror movie protagonists that fill most of this list, but there isn't a single character in movie history more inextricably linked to a hammer than the Marvel Cinematic Universe's resident Norse god. In fact, Mjolnir is the only hammer on the list that has a name of its own and it is so significant that its appearance in a New Mexico crater was used to tease the arrival of Thor in the post-credits scene of Iron Man 2.

Mjolnir can only be wielded by those deemed worthy of its power and serves as a focal point for Thor's abilities to control and summon lightning, wind and rain. It also serves as a more straightforward weapon for use in battle and will fly straight back to Thor if thrown.

Thor is accompanied by his hammer in all of his Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances, right up until it was destroyed by Hela in last year's Thor: Ragnarok. It remains to be seen whether Mjolnir will be replaced with a different weapon, but there's nothing more connected with the Asgardian warrior than his hammer.
