10 Most Nonsensical Plot Holes In The MCU

7. When Exactly Did Thor Inspire Legends?

The idea behind the Asgardians referring to themselves as ‘gods’ stems from their visits to Earth, or Midgard, sometime between the later post-classical period to the Middle Ages. Possessed of enormous strength and power, long-lived and very hard to kill, the Asgardian warriors were worshipped by the Germanic and Scandinavian tribes of the time.

The thing is, though… Thor mentions in The Avengers that he’s only visited Earth one time prior to that:

“When I first came to earth, Loki's rage followed me here and your people paid the price. And now again…”

That would be during the events of the first Thor movie, which is where Loki first properly turned against his brother (i.e., while not pulling some horrifying and/or sadistic prank on his lunk-headed brother). However, if that’s the case then when was it that the Germanic tribes met Thor, sufficiently to worship him as a God?

How do we have legends of Thor throughout that part of the world when he’d never been there before the 21st century?

As an aside, Avengers: Infinity War has Thor cite himself as being 1500 years old, meaning that he was born around the 6th century AD. That’s 500 years after the first mention of Thor in Tacitus’ book on the German peoples - but you probably have to be a mythology geek to consider that a plot hole.
