10 Most Nonsensical Plot Holes In The MCU
3. What If..?'s Steve Rogers Shouldn't Be A Main Character
What If..? episode 1 shows what might have happened if, shot by that Nazi saboteur during the Project: Rebirth super soldier experiment, Steve Rogers had been unable to continue - and Peggy Carter had received the serum instead, becoming Captain Carter.
However, the episode goes on to showcase Rogers in a leading role afterwards, continuing to get to know both Agent Carter and Howard Stark.
Rogers was only selected for Project: Rebirth because of Abraham Erskine's personal recommendation, and Erskine is now dead. Carter may have a soft spot for him, but as the show itself is at pains to point out, Carter has almost no influence with the US military at that point. She's "lucky to even be in the room".
It makes absolutely no sense that a man with no military or combat experience - medically invalidated from serving his country due to a list of chronic conditions as long as your arm, and with a fresh bullet wound - would still be anywhere in the house, let alone room-adjacent enough to develop a relationship with a top secret super soldier and the scientific genius attached to the war effort.
It also makes no sense that said genius would develop the Hydra Stomper battlesuit for that war effort… only to give it to Steve. But What If…? wants to keep the Carter/Rogers relationship intact, despite the changed history, and skates blithely over the huge plot holes required to do so.
