10 Most Notorious Star Wars Urban Legends
6. Footage Of Luke And Biggs Was Included In An Early Cut
Verdict: Untrue
According to those in the know, every film is made three times: in the writing, the filming and the editing.
The editing process can result in scenes, characters and even entire subplots being removed, and Star Wars own Harrison Ford filmed a cameo for E.T. that ended up on the cutting room floor.
So spare a thought for Garrick Hagon, who filmed several scenes for Star Wars as Biggs Darklighter, Lukes Tatooine-based pal who turns his friends head with talk of joining the Rebel Alliance but barely featured in the final edit.
The urban legend concerning Biggs revolves around numerous cinemagoers believing that a conversation between him and Luke on Tatooine was included in the original theatrical cut. Many swear blind that they saw this scene in cinemas, on TV or both, and its removal is a minor conspiracy born of George Lucass revisionist tendencies.
It's impossible to definitively disprove this but it's relatively easy to explain its origin. The scene in question was included, complete with pictures, in the original Star Wars Storybook, a brief snippet was shown in The Making of Star Wars television special, both the novelisation and a comic book featured it, and a 1981 radio drama also used an expanded version. The best explanation is that these nods combined to create a false memory and birth a pervasive urban legend.
