10 Most Obscure And Underrated Slasher Horror Movies

As with many great horrors, 1980's Motel Hell is sensible enough to know when to laugh at itself. The cult classic is also another prime example that a low budget should be no obstacle in creating a first rate picture that draws laughs and gasps in equal measure.

Combining some legitimately disturbing moments with a wickedly black sense of depraved humor, Motel Hell follows the diabolical story of Vincent and Ida Smith; farmers who just so happen to kidnap, murder and eat anyone unfortunate enough to be trapped by the duo on the road. Before they are eaten, the victims have their vocal chords cut and are buried up to their necks in the most twisted form of a garden imaginable. They are then fed until they are deemed right to be eaten, at which point they are served up - Vincent is famous amongst local residents for his delicious assortment of "smoked meat".

While many cite Scream as the first standout example that was self-aware enough to embrace the ironic side of the more ridiculous stereotypes associated with slashers, it could be argued that director Kevin Connor was miles ahead of the curve all the way back in 1980. It says a great deal that a film can feature a chainsaw fight in an abattoir, against a villain wearing a literal pig's head over his own, and still leave audiences laughing.

Motel Hell has stood the test of time and remains a horrific hidden gem to this day.
