10 Most Ominous Cinematic Prisons
6. Fiorina "Fury" 161, Alien 3
As if acid blood monsters on spaceships and an alien queen laying hundreds of eggs had not been frightening enough, David Fincher decided to have Alien 3 take place on a prison planet.
The entire Fiorina 161 is a gigantic penal institution suspended in eternity, floating 19.5 light years from Earth, with a harsh climate and virtually no life.
The Class C Work Correctional Unit is a place that steers clear of any contact with civilization, with its prisoners having embraced religion and turned their missed chances into a possible chance at redemption.
With the unexpected arrival of the indomitable Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the group soon finds out that they are hosting a monstrous alien guest as well. There is nowhere to go and the inmates have to join forces with Ripley in order to have any kind of shot against the shrewd creature.
The claustrophobic atmosphere is often overwhelming for the story -- to paraphrase Jurassic World’s Owen Grady, the Xenomorphs are wow enough -- and the story is nowhere near Ridley Scott’s atmospheric original or James Cameron’s nuanced sequel, but there is no denying the prison's originality or the multidimensional supporting characters. There is no escaping this fury.
